Celebrate your freedom to read this week! Visit the official Banned Books Week website and the ALA website to learn more about banned & challenged books.
Check out the map to see where books have been challegned and banned during the past couple of years. Do you know of a book challenge that hasn’t been included on the map? Tell us about it!
Also, be sure to read the poem “Manifesto” by Ellen Hopkins. You may have read her work before, she’s written several popular books including Crank & Glass, both of which were recently challenged at a school library in Norman, OK.

Gabriela Carrillo, the winner of Golf Mill Mall’s recent Teen Idol @ the Mill contest will perform a special after-hours concert at the library! The first and second runners-up of the singing competition, Brittany Tepper and Catherine Krol, will also perform. Visit the information or circulation desks on the first floor to get your very own genuine, bonified card with the Niles Public Library District. Why get a library card? Here’s a few good reasons:
1. Use your card to check out books, magazines, DVDs, ebooks and more.
2. Also use our computers and access our online databases from anywhere!
3. Library cards are cool. Seriously!
4. Library cards are free — sort of: they’ve been paid for already by taxes, so you don’t have to pay twice!
5. There’s no minimum age to get a library card. If you’re under 18 then you’ll need to get an adult’s signature. Otherwise, just show us a picture ID.
6. Your library card will always love you unconditionally and keep you warm on cold nights.
Residents of Niles and some parts of unincorporated Des Plaines are eligible for cards. Residents of other cities can register cards from their home library with us to get borrowing and computer privileges.
